My name is Dr Leah Bruer Henen and I am an Adult Psychiatrist and Medical Psychotherapist based in Cheshire, South Manchester.
I am specialised in talking therapies, such as psychoanalysis (Freud/the unconscious), Family Therapy (systems, transgenerational trauma) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (thoughts-control-actions).
I trained in the NHS, providing individual and group psychotherapy in hospitals, outpatient clinics, therapeutic communities and forensic secure units. I have lectured and trained doctors, GPs and mental health practitioners to help their clients get compassionate and trauma-informed support.
I have experience in managing Mood Disorders (Anxiety/Depression/Bipolar), Complex Emotional Difficulties and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
I worked in the NHS specialising in the field of the Body/ Mind. I firmly believe that we cannot separate the two and that our Body will always tell us what our Mind may not be able to. I therefore have specialism in Liaison Psychiatry, which supports my work in the fields of Medically Unexplained Syndromes and Functional Disorders.
With this experience, I took up a Lead Consultant Post for an independent company to help Young Adults struggling with Complex Emotional Difficulties and Eating Disorders. Here I deepened my insight into Complex PTSD, Neurodiversity and high levels of risk.
To help those that are struggling with pain, burn out and stress, I am training in a gentle and body orientated therapy called Somatic Experiencing.
Being an Integrative Psychiatrists, and encompass life style factors in the assessment of your well being.

A treatment where we try and bring stillness and flow into your body one moment at a time.
We notice how your body works, how we can support it to get back into flow, as the locked in thoughts, feelings and memories gently come to the surface.
A trauma informed treatment for Burn Out, PTSD, stress and anxiety, physical traumas, falls, surgeries and pain,
Using imagery, imagination, movement and meditation, we clear transgenerational and personal trauma.
Due to being a trainee in my second year, I am offering sessions for £70.
I am currently offering only Virtual Session (Teams/Zoom)
Our first meeting, to explore what brought you - we will spend time looking at your symptoms, and how these link to your life, past and present.
The Assessment, will lead to a written Formulation for your records, and agreed treatment plans, with referral recommendations.
Medication reviews can be agreed.
I offer both virtual or in-person sessions
As part of the Assessment, we could agree to move to psychotherapy sessions, which would include Somatic Experiencing as a foundation of practice. We would work with Mindfulness Practices, grounding, following trauma responses in your body, underpinned with psychoanalytic understanding of your story.
Virtual Meetings
As part of my psychoanalytic training, I have extensive experience in supervision for Mental Health Practitioners and Psychotherapists. I specialise in supporting clinicians working with complex clients, using psychoanalytic theory, but also Trauma Informed practices to help the therapeutic process. I enjoy getting to know my supervisees to help them bring and work through any counter-transferential responses in line with overall formulation.
Pre-agreed - can be virtual or in-person at your offices
As part of my training as a Medical Psychotherapist, my expertise lies in supporting teams to work through complex patient scenarios. I use my psychoanalytic training and experience of leading teams to support a working through.
Pre-agreed - can be virtual or in-person at your offices
Extensive experience of running Balint and other Reflective Practice Groups for Teams, has given me the insight in how to support Teams in crisis.

Dr Leah is a Psychiatrist specialising in Medical Psychotherapy. A Psychiatrist is a Medical Doctor who has specialised in the Medicine of the Mind. Psychiatrists usually work in hospitals or Community Mental Health Teams. Dr Leah has completed 15 years of training in the NHS.
Psychiatrist specialise in either in the field of Adults, Child and Adolescent (CAMHS), Drug and Alcohol, Learning Disability - the list goes on! This means that the Psychiatrist will then work in that area of speciality.
Dr Leah specialised in both the Psychotherapies and General Adult Psychiatry. This gives her the remit to work psychologically with anyone within Working Age.
Psychiatrists are able to prescribe medication, make diagnoses and ultimately help decide whether a person with severe mental illness and risk to harm themselves and others, to be put into hospital. Psychiatrists also review the physical health of a patient working closely with the person's GP.
Psychotherapists work with people to understand their struggles in life, and use talking therapy to support them. Psychotherapists also have different ways of working with people, but they do not give medication or put people into hospital.
Dr Leah's Psychiatric training has helped her understand the link between peoples struggles, which can also be named 'symptoms' and how they related to diagnoses. She can review medications and highlight good options that would need prescribing. However, her psychotherapy training allows her to see these symptoms in the context of the person's life experience, helping the person grow and understand whilst finding ways to manage these without medications.
Dr Leah uses talking therapy and somatic experiencing body work to help find relief from the symptoms they are experiencing.
Dr Leah trained mainly in Psychoanalysis and Somatic Experiencing.
These are brief summaries of therapies offered.
This is a therapy based on people like Freud, Klein and Jung. Its about making links between what is happening to what it may mean. We try to understand the meaning behind what is happening for you, things that maybe unconscious. It is a therapy that thinks about the relationships you are in and how they may be impacting you emotionally. We try to have the emotions live in our work together.
Family/systems therapy is where we can think about how your family has affected you, as well as intergenerational trauma.
Somatic Experiencing is a body type therapy that helps you work through stuck emotions within the body allowing your nervous system to come back into a state of relaxation. It is a powerful method that keeps working for upto 48hrs after the session. For PTSD and Burn out.
These are physical health symptoms that when medically investigated do not show to have a physical cause. They cause a real burden to the person who experiencing them and finding no real answers in the common medical model, can lead to high levels of distress and isolation. They need to be understood, validated and worked with in a different way.
Trauma is anything that has happened to a person that has left a mark either psychically, emotionally or within the nervous system. It usually is an event that somehow has changed the way a person behaves, thinks and feels. They may not be aware of it, but when completing assessment and/or therapeutic work, they can find memories of events in their past come up, linked to what has brought them to the meeting. Working through that event or 'trauma' can often lead to understanding, relief and at times resolution of long held energies and patterns.
Working with this awareness allows for empathy, support and patience when meeting people in their health journey.
